What is a window friction hinge?

A window friction hinge is a type of hardware used to support and control the movement of windows. It allows the window to open smoothly while also providing friction to hold the window in position without the need for additional hardware like stays or supports.

How does a friction hinge work?

Friction hinges operate by using internal components that provide resistance to the window's movement. Typically, they include a friction pad. When the window is opened, the friction pad creates resistance inside a channel, allowing the window to stay in the desired position.

What configurations of friction hinge are available?
  1. Top Hung Friction Hinges: These hinges are designed for windows that open outward from the top. Top hung friction hinges are typically attached at the top of the window frame and allow the window sash to pivot smoothly outward. They provide support and control for top-hung windows, enabling them to stay open at various angles while offering resistance against wind and other forces.

  2. Side Hung (Casement) Friction Hinges: Friction hinges for side hung windows, also known as casement windows, are hinged on the side of the frame. These hinges allow the window sash to swing outward like a door. Side hung friction hinges are crucial for controlling the movement of casement windows, ensuring smooth operation and secure positioning when open.

  3. Dual Function Friction Hinges: Some friction hinges are designed to function as both top hung and side hung hinges. These versatile hinges offer flexibility, allowing windows to open outward from either the top or side depending on the installation orientation. Dual function friction hinges are suitable for windows where both configurations may be desired or required.

What are Standard Friction Hinges?

Standard friction hinges are the most commonly used type in the UK. They come in side hung (fixed to top and bottom of the sash) or top hung (fitted to the sides of the sash) varieties, with lengths ranging from 6, 8, 10, 12, 16, 20 and 24 inches. Notable options include the Vanguard and Securistyle (Yale) hinges.

What are Egress Only Friction Hinges?

Egress only friction hinges are designed for side hung windows and comply with fire escape regulations. They are typically available in 12 or 16-inch sizes and must meet specific criteria for width, height, and clear openable area. Building regulations recommend using Egress hinges with a minimum opening of 80º for all fire escape windows.

What are Egress Restricted Friction Hinges?

Egress restricted friction hinges are used in locations where occupant safety is a concern, such as care facilities or homes with vulnerable individuals. They include integrated restrictors and come in specific sizes and configurations. This hinge is required where there is a concern for the occupant’s safety and that they may not sufficiently understand the risks of windows on the first floor or above. The Nico Egress Friction Hinge with Integrated Restrictor covers this problem very well, choose from a left or right hand side hung version available in either 12 or 16 inch.

What are Easy Clean Friction Hinges?

Easy Clean Friction Hinges allow the sash to be moved to the centre of the frame for cleaning. This is not a regulation in England but it is in Scotland. Usually used on the first floor and above and can only be used on side hung windows. The reason we stock the Yale Egress Easy Clean Hinge in 12 and 16 inch, is that the sash can be moved easily from just the handle. Most easy clean hinges require complex manual operation to achieve this function. The Mega Egress version is unique in that it has an 8 inch option that suits French casements with flying mullions very well and the 13 inch is capable of carrying up to 40kg (you have to disable the easy clean facility to achieve this weight capacity).
